TAX READINESS · GHANA SME GUIDE

Three habits that make tax preparation easier

1. Separate business and personal money

Use dedicated business bank and mobile-money accounts wherever practical. Record owner contributions and withdrawals separately instead of treating them as ordinary sales or operating costs. This makes the true business position easier to explain and review.

2. Capture transaction evidence immediately

File valid invoices, receipts and payment evidence when each transaction occurs. Link every document to the relevant entry and keep a consistent digital backup. Missing evidence can delay review and weaken confidence in otherwise valid records.

3. Reconcile before filing

Match the accounting records to bank statements, mobile-money activity, payroll and tax schedules. Investigate unexplained differences rather than carrying them forward. Reconciliation helps identify duplicates, omissions and classification errors while there is still time to correct them.

A practical month-end checklist

  • Post all sales, expenses, payroll items and owner transactions.
  • Confirm that supporting documents are complete and readable.
  • Reconcile bank and mobile-money balances to the ledger.
  • Review unusual balances and document each correction.
  • Keep the final reports and supporting schedules together.

This is general business guidance. The exact filing and documentation requirements for a business should be confirmed with an appropriately qualified Ghanaian tax professional or the Ghana Revenue Authority.
